Three watches carried the week
Two weeks ago the page hit 10,000 and someone walked away with a watch to mark it. This week we crossed 15,000. Every bit of that came from people sending in their watches and their stories, and from the conversations happening in the comments under them.
Movado Museum (blue)
A Chicago Police detective works homicide on the South Side, and the watch that rides along is a blue Movado Museum. It was a gift from his father the year he graduated the academy at twenty-one, a decade ago, and it is the veteran of a collection that has grown up around it. He keeps coming back to it anyway. The crystal is scuffed and the bracelet is worn, and he would not have it any other way, he calls the marks battle scars that tell stories. The last two frames are him at work, pulled from news footage of scenes he caught. A dress watch is an unusual thing to wear to a homicide, until you know it was the first watch that ever meant something.
Seiko SSK023
A firefighter and EMT in a beach town on the North Carolina coast, photographed in the back of the engine, enroute to a working structure fire. Helmet racked overhead, axe in its bracket, and a blacked-out Seiko 5 Sports Field GMT on the wrist over the sweater cuff. Somewhere ahead there is smoke showing. This is the quiet minute before the work.
Rolex submariner date
A detective and SWAT operator at a Florida agency, riding in the back of a Bearcat on the way to serve a warrant, a black Rolex Submariner Date on the wrist in a lap full of kit. His submission came with a philosophy attached: watches used the way they are meant to be used. The Submariner is the watch most owners keep for the weekend and the safe. This one rides to warrants, knocking against rifle and plate carrier, which is closer to the life it was designed for than most Subs will ever see.
