An RCMP officer in Alberta, photographed at the end of an outstretched arm, the cruiser's crest and the letters RCMP GRC filling the background in full colour. The submission was spare. A role, a province, a watch. Sometimes that is all a wrist shot needs, because the picture does the talking, a working wrist in front of a working vehicle somewhere in big country. Alberta means long highways, long winters, and distances between calls that most departments never have to think about. On the wrist is a Longines Hydroconquest, blue dial and bezel over steel, a dive watch a long way from any ocean, which has never once stopped a dive watch from doing honest work on land. One officer, one province, one watch, and a quiet minute beside the vehicle before whatever comes next.

A Marine with an SSTA platoon, photographed in the dust at Twentynine Palms, a radio handset in his fist, notes strapped to his wrist, boots and rock in every direction. The occasion was SLTE 4-26, and his post was a hide site, "monitoring a duration suppression," which is the kind of phrase that tells you everything by telling you almost nothing. The watch has been there for all of it. A high school graduation gift from his uncle, and in his words, "the only piece of kit that hasn't changed over the past 3 years." Rifles change, radios change, platoons turn over, and a gift from family keeps ticking through every evolution. The watch is a Casio GD350-8, bought as a present for a kid finishing high school, now three years deep into a Marine's working life.

A patrol deputy with the Orange County Sheriff's Office, photographed at the side of the marked unit, a black hat with a moose and lightning emblem in hand, the watch riding a rubber strap on a tattooed forearm. His submission came in with a grin you can hear. "On the road, searching for a robbery suspect with a warrant." That is the shift, hunting somebody who does not want to be found, and this photo is the thirty second pause in the middle of it. The watch is an Omega Seamaster 300, a wave pattern rolling across the dial, a piece built for water spending its days doing road work instead. Somewhere out there is a suspect with a warrant. Here, beside the cruiser, is the deputy on his trail, and the watch keeping the time until they meet.
