A Coast Guard sailor aboard CGC John Witherspoon, a fast response cutter working the waters of western Alaska, raises his wrist over the rail. On it is a Vostok GMT, a scratched, well-worn Russian instrument watch on a bracelet made in Vietnam, given to him by his childhood best friend, now in the Air Force, the day a wedding and a promotion landed together. The scratches and the drifting GMT hand are not flaws. They are the record of the miles.
