Timex Expedition
The Expedition is Timex doing what Timex has done since the 1950s torture tests: a watch priced to be bought without deliberation and built to outlast the deliberate purchases. Field watch layout, big Arabic numerals with a 24 hour ring inside them, 50 meters of water resistance, and a quartz movement that will hold its rate for years on a coin cell.
Its one piece of genuine invention is Indiglo. Most lume is paint that drinks light and leaks it back, brightest in the first minute and fading all night. Indiglo is an electroluminescent panel behind the entire dial: press the crown and the whole face lights evenly, every numeral at once, as readable at 3 AM as at noon. When it appeared in 1992 it was a legitimately new answer to the oldest problem a watch has, and thirty years on it is still the feature every Timex owner demonstrates to people unasked.
