The Explorer II arrived in 1971 with a fixed 24 hour bezel and a dedicated hand to match, built for people who lose track of day and night: cave explorers and polar crews were the pitch. Underground, or somewhere the sun will not set, the watch tells you whether it is 3am or 3pm.
The white dial version has its own name in the community, the Polar, and it is one of the most legible dials Rolex makes.
It has never been the famous Rolex, and that is part of its appeal. The Submariner went to Hollywood. The Explorer II kept its job.
