Two watches share his rotation, a Panerai 00380 and a Rolex Coke GMT, and it is the Coke that leads the post, red and black bezel over a black dial, with the Panerai holding down the second frame. The bezel colors have a logic, red for the daylight hours, black for night, though on a wrist in the field it mostly just looks right. The Coke Bezel The red and black GMT bezel has a precise birthday. In 1983 Rolex launched the reference 16760, the first watch to wear the GMT-Master II name, and dressed it in a bezel collectors immediately christened the Coke. Red for the daylight hours, black for night, so the 24 hour hand reads at a glance. The 16760 carried the new caliber 3085, the first Rolex GMT movement to let the local hour hand jump independently of the 24 hour hand, which turned the watch from a two time zone display into a true traveler's tool. A sapphire crystal and white gold surrounds on the markers came with it, and the case grew thick enough that collectors nicknamed it the Fat Lady. It was only ever made in steel. Forty years on, the combination still reads instantly, on an airliner or on a shift in New York City.
