Bulova Lunar Pilot
On August 2, 1971, Apollo 15 commander Dave Scott walked on the Moon wearing his own Bulova chronograph. The crystal had popped off his issued Speedmaster, so he strapped on the Bulova he had brought along as his personal backup, making it the watch that reached the lunar surface without ever being NASA issue. In 2015 that original sold at RR Auction for roughly 1.6 million dollars.
Bulova's modern Lunar Pilot recreates it around a high performance quartz movement running at 262 kHz, eight times the frequency of standard quartz and accurate to within ten seconds a year, under sapphire with a tachymeter scale.
The Lunar Pilot exists because a backup answered when the primary failed, and it kept time on another world. This one keeps time in a threat assessment classroom in San Diego.
