It was a routine crew training flight, pinnacle landings and sling loads, the kind of day that is ordinary until it is your last one. The time on the dial told him it was time to fly home. The watch is a Sangin Merlin, bought as a marker of a lifelong dream fulfilled, a long way from the Casio F-91W he used to wear. Some watches close a chapter. This one did. Sangin Instruments is a veteran-owned American micro-brand built by and for the military and first-responder community, known for purpose-built tool watches and a following that runs deep in special operations circles. The Merlin is Sangin's compact, do-everything quartz watch, sized to move from the field to the office, the sort of watch bought to mark something rather than to flip. For this owner it was a deliberate upgrade, a reward given to himself for reaching a goal set long before.

The photo is from his final flight, after which he could no longer perform flight duties. It was a basic rated crew member training flight, pinnacle landings and sling loads, unremarkable to some and unforgettable to him. Flying helicopters was a lifelong dream, and the watch, a long step up from the Casio F-91W he always wore, is the token of having lived it. The time it showed was the signal to fly home for the last time.
