Seiko SSK023
An Air Force Security Forces defender at the firehouse. Eleven years into a Security Forces career, now with a Contingency Response Squadron, and a volunteer firefighter on top of it. On his wrist, a Seiko SSK023. Through a recent deployment he wore it day and night and never took it off. He brought his Garmin along too, and in his words, did not even bother to give it time. Back home it rides along to the firehouse. This is his true everyday watch, and his wife and kids had it engraved for him when he joined the fire service last year. Seiko SSK023
When Seiko rebuilt the Seiko 5 Sports line in 2019, it turned its most famous entry level tool watches into a platform, and in early 2024 that platform gained a field watch with a GMT complication. The SSK023 is a 39.4mm stainless steel field piece with a 24 hour bezel, 100 meters of water resistance, and Seiko's 4R34 automatic, a 24 jewel calibre with a 41 hour power reserve.
The 4R34 is what collectors call an office caller GMT. The extra 24 hour hand sets independently in one hour jumps, so the wearer keeps local time on the main hands and tracks a second zone on the fourth hand. It is among the most affordable automatic GMTs in series production, which is why it shows up on wrists doing real work instead of living in drawers.
Worn day and night through a deployment and never taken off, then engraved by a wife and kids for a second calling. That is the entire job description of a field watch.
