Casio G-Shock GW-B5600
A Lieutenant and mechanized infantry officer in the Pakistan Army, wearing a Casio G-Shock GW-B5600. The watch was a gift from his late grandfather, who was an Air Marshal and Commander in Chief of the Pakistan Air Force in the 1960s. The photo is from an immediate dispersal area during a field exercise, sitting and awaiting further orders. Which is most of soldiering, in every army there has ever been. The square is the original. This case shape is the direct descendant of the first G-Shock from 1983, the watch Casio's Kikuo Ibe threw out of a bathroom window until it survived.
The GW-B5600 keeps the ancestral shape and quietly modernizes everything inside it: solar charging so it never needs a battery, radio and Bluetooth time sync so it is never wrong.
There is something honest about a forty year old design that never needed a redesign, only better internals. Most icons get retired to heritage lines. The square is still on active duty.
