In 2020 Garmin took the Instinct's already absurd battery life and pointed it at the sun. The Instinct Solar added Power Glass, a solar charging lens over the display, stretching smartwatch mode from 24 days to as much as 54 with a few hours of daily sun. In battery saver mode, Garmin rates it as effectively unlimited on three hours of sunlight a day.
Underneath, it is still the same tool: fiber reinforced polymer case built to U.S. military standard 810, 100 meter rating, always on memory in pixel display, buttons instead of a touchscreen.
A night shift is the opposite of solar charging conditions. The watch banks its power in the daylight hours and spends it through the dark ones.
